Air Cadet Training Corps

The Air Cadet Training Corps was officially recognised on 14th July 1949, when the Singapore Legislative Assembly passed the "MATC Ordinance 1949 Bill" whereby all administration and training of the corps were governed by this Ordinance under the control of the Defence Ministry. This jurisdiction was transferred to the Education Ministry in 1963.

National Cadet Corps

In 1969, the land, sea, air and girls units and the police units were integrated under one organisation - the National Cadet Corps. That year also saw the establishment of the NCC Headquarters which is now in charge of the training, discipline and welfare of the cadet movements. In 1970, the Corp's Police arm split to form the NPCC under the Ministry of Home Affairs when the then Ministry of Interior and Defence was re-organised to form two seperate ministries. The NCC continued under the Ministry of Defence. These events led to the NCC as we know it today.

The NCC Council

By 1971 , there were 82 Land (Boy) units, 52 Land (Girl) units, 3 Sea Training Centres and an Air Training Centre. The NCC Council was established in 1971. The 11-man council comprised of senior officials from the Education and Defence Ministries. 1972 saw the promulgation of the NCC Act.

In 1974 there was a general overall re-organisation and revamping of the NCC. The training syllabus was revised by with MINDEF playing a greater role by providing Mobile Training Teams & Training Centres. By 1981 there were 166 units with a total strength of 19,527 cadets. A re-organisation was carried out in 1982 to upgrade the quality of training. Consequently, the number of units and the overall cadet strength was reduced. In 1987, there were only 118 units with a total strength of 10,786 cadets.

In January 1988, the first NCC (Sea) Girls unit was formed with 25 cadets from Pasir Ris, Katong Convent, Temasek and Braddell Secondary Schools. NCC (Air) started recruiting girls in January 1989.
